At Kindness Ranch Animal Sanctuary in the charming town of Hartville, Wyoming, John Ramer lovingly cares for a delightful array of animals, including dogs, cats, pigs, horses, sheep, goats, cows, and llamas. These wonderful creatures, who were once destined for euthanasia, have been given a new lease on life, thanks to Ramer's dedicated efforts in collaborating with research laboratories to offer them a brighter future.
Ramer, the executive director of Kindness Ranch, shares his uplifting philosophy: “It's so easy to be against something. I could tell everybody that I'm against euthanasia and that they need to change their ways to appease me, but that doesn't get anything done. But then I have to figure out what I'm in favor of.” His approach emphasizes building positive relationships with these facilities, educating them about alternatives to euthanasia, and finding common ground. “I'm for building relationships with these facilities and informing them that there's alternatives to euthanasia,” he explains, showcasing his commitment to advocacy while still addressing the important issue of animal testing.
Founded in 2007 by Denver psychologist Dr. David Groobman, Kindness Ranch has become a trailblazer in rehabilitating former research animals with the noble aim of rehoming them. The sanctuary has blossomed from rescuing just 30 animals a year to successfully placing over 500 dogs and cats into loving homes in a single year. “Since then, we've developed from rescuing 30 animals a year to recently surpassing 500 dogs and cats placed into private homes in a one-year period,” Ramer proudly states.
Among the residents, beagles are the most common guests at the ranch, and during a recent visit in early June, the team was excitedly preparing to welcome 47 more of these loving companions. Farm supervisor Terri Brunner emphasizes the sanctuary's positive outlook: “We don't focus on their past. … What we're focusing on now is where their futures are, and we hope that we can provide them with a sound and comfortable and enriching life here at Kindness Ranch.”
