A Stranger’s Compassion Helps Navy Veteran Move Toward a Well-Earned Retirement
A chance encounter at an airport has become an uplifting example of how one thoughtful act can inspire thousands of people to help.
While waiting aboard a flight departing from the Los Angeles area, LaCinda Thackery noticed an airport employee struggling to walk across the tarmac. Despite the visible pain caused by his deteriorating knees, the man continued working and made his way toward the plane.
Moved by his determination, Thackery recorded a video and shared it on TikTok, hoping someone might recognize him. Viewers quickly embraced her mission to learn his identity and find a way to support him.
The employee was soon identified as James Blair, a 64-year-old Navy veteran. Blair served in the military from 1980 to 1990 before beginning a civilian career as a fuel mechanic. He has worked at John Wayne Airport since 2006, continuing in the physically demanding role even as problems with both knees have made walking increasingly difficult.
Retirement had remained beyond Blair’s reach because his income also helped provide hospice care for his elderly mother.
As Thackery’s video reached millions of viewers, messages poured in from people eager to help. After someone identified Blair, Thackery contacted him through his supervisor because Blair did not have a smartphone or any social media accounts.
His supervisor then generously drove about 90 minutes to Blair’s home and helped him establish a GoFundMe campaign. Thackery shared the fundraiser with the enormous audience that had gathered around her original video.
The response was extraordinary. By the article’s publication, more than 6,000 donors had contributed approximately $180,000 to a fund created solely for Blair’s benefit.
“I was speechless because I felt like the world showed up,” Thackery told KSL News, “and I think in these times we need people like that.”
Blair was deeply touched by the generosity of people he had never met. He said the experience renewed his faith and reminded him that goodness can appear in unexpected ways.
“I believed in God, but I didn’t really believe in God. But now, with the angel sitting next to you, it’s amazing,” Blair told Thackery, according to KSL. “I have a hard time working to pay bills, so other people probably have the same problems. When they’re giving money they really can’t spare, that amazes me. I’m just blown away.”
The name “the Angel” stayed with Thackery after the pair finally met. She shook Blair’s hand and presented him with a check for $174,000. In return, Blair sent her flowers addressed to the person whose compassion had transformed his life.
Although Blair had not officially retired at the time of publication, the donations had already brought him greater comfort and hope. One of his first purchases was a new bed.
What began with one passenger noticing another person’s struggle became a joyful display of generosity. Thackery’s decision to pay attention—and the willingness of thousands of strangers to contribute—gave a hardworking veteran the opportunity to look toward the future with dignity, relief, and renewed faith.
