Brightly colored panels of dark gray, purple, orange, yellow, blue, green, and red complement the main mural, adding to the building’s eye-catching design. Together, these panels provide an impressive 267 kW of solar capacity, powering the common areas and saving residents and owners an estimated $80,000 annually in energy costs starting from the fifth year. This remarkable saving is akin to the monthly revenue generated from seven additional residential units. Furthermore, the use of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technology instead of traditional materials enables a quick four-year return on investment.
As Mitrex, the provider of the solar panels, articulates, this innovative project blends advanced solar technology with vibrant artistic expression, redefining what sustainable architecture can be. Initially, the project leaders considered a smaller 60 kW system for the renovation, but soon realized they needed a more ambitious approach to fully power the building and meet funding criteria from Canada’s Deep Retrofit Accelerator Initiative. By creatively integrating solar cells into Cardinal’s artwork, they achieved this goal while ensuring the mural featured a robust aluminum honeycomb core and a rain screen to protect it from environmental elements.
