Restored Prairie Creek Gives Young Salmon a Place to Thrive

A hopeful transformation is unfolding along California’s redwood coast, where conservationists have spent more than a decade helping Prairie Creek regain its natural rhythms.

The creek provides vital habitat for three threatened salmon species: California Coastal Chinook, Northern California steelhead, and coho salmon. Coho have faced especially steep losses, with their population declining by 90% over the past century.

Rather than forcing the waterway into a fixed shape, restoration teams gave it space to function like a healthy creek once more. Wetlands, ponds, side channels, and floodplain habitats have been reconnected, while vegetation and areas of slow-moving water have been restored.

The project, led by NOAA Fisheries and a wide-ranging group of partners, also turned the site of a former lumber mill into a flourishing floodplain ecosystem. Young salmon can now find plentiful food, gentle water, and protective shelter as they prepare for their demanding migration to the Pacific Ocean.

Young salmon are growing faster

Years of careful monitoring are producing encouraging results. Juvenile coho salmon living in the restored areas are growing more quickly than those that remain in Prairie Creek’s main channel.

“In certain sites and certain years, the fish using restoration sites grew up to twice as fast,” said Carter Adamson, a fish biologist with the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission who studied salmon growth in the creek.

That additional growth could make an important difference throughout the salmon’s life. Larger, healthier juveniles may have a better chance of completing their journey to the ocean, surviving their years at sea, and eventually returning to their home waters as adults to reproduce.

Researchers from Cal Poly Humboldt have followed the salmon before, during, and after the restoration work. By tagging individual fish with tiny microchips, they have been able to study the animals’ growth, movement, and survival over time.

More coho are returning home

The early findings offer another welcome reason for optimism. NOAA reports that 2.6% of juvenile coho from the 2023 cohort survived their years in the ocean and returned as adults to spawn. Earlier survival estimates were approximately 1%.

Scientists will continue monitoring Prairie Creek through at least 2028. Because ocean conditions can vary considerably, the additional research will help determine whether faster-growing juveniles consistently lead to greater numbers of adult salmon returning home.

For now, Prairie Creek is demonstrating the remarkable benefits of giving nature what it needs to recover. When young salmon have calm water, abundant food, healthy plants, and safe places to hide, they do far more than simply enter the restored habitat—they flourish.

The project is a joyful reminder that helping an endangered species does not always require a complicated new solution. Sometimes, repairing past damage and restoring nature’s essential ingredients can allow an entire ecosystem to come alive again.
