Woman Regains Sight After World’s First Central Retina Transplant

Pioneering Eye Surgery Helps Woman Recognize Her Son and Beloved Dog Again

A remarkable medical achievement in Turin has restored hope—and partial vision—to a woman who had been blind for several years.

In a world-first operation, surgeons transferred a complete macula together with the cornea, sclera, and supporting tissue from one of the patient’s eyes to the other. Soon after the procedure, she could see well enough to recognize her son and her loyal dog, Joe.

The patient, 67-year-old Elena, lost her sight following a road accident. The crash severed the optic nerve in her left eye, permanently disrupting its connection to the brain. However, many of the eye’s other structures remained healthy.

Her right eye had suffered almost the opposite injuries. Its optic nerve was preserved, but the accident severely damaged the retina, cornea, and the area containing ocular stem cells. Because of this extensive trauma, a conventional corneal transplant could not restore her vision.

Together, though, Elena’s two eyes contained the healthy components needed to create one functioning eye. Turning that possibility into reality required an operation unlike any previously performed.

The macula—a small, light-sensitive area at the center of the retina—provides the detailed central vision people use to recognize faces, read, and see fine details. Professor Michele Reibaldi devised a plan to move the intact macula, cornea, sclera, and connective tissue from Elena’s left eye into her right eye, where the optic nerve could still carry visual information to the brain.

The demanding six-hour procedure required precise cooperation among surgeons, anesthetists, and hospital staff. Reibaldi described the operation as a “complicated marathon.”

“This procedure represents a new frontier in ocular surgery,” said Reibaldi, an ocular surgeon at Molinette Hospital in Turin’s City of Health and Science. “Before today, such a contemporaneous transplant of the anterior eye tissue had occurred just once before, while the central retina has never been possible.”

“Now we will wait and see how well the transplanted retina functions, though early signs are encouraging.”

Follow-up examinations have brought more welcome news: the transplanted tissues have reattached properly, and Elena continues to regain sight in her right eye.

Reibaldi also celebrated the exceptional teamwork that made the pioneering surgery possible. Yet the team’s greatest reward, he said, was “the incredible moment in which Elena, opening her eyes, could finally recognize her son and faithful companion in life, Joe the dog.”

For Elena, her family, and the medical professionals who cared for her, that joyful moment marked both a personal triumph and a promising new chapter in ocular surgery.
