YouTubers exceed $40M for clean water: 'We're just getting started!'

In August, the world witnessed a heartwarming initiative as the beloved YouTuber MrBeast, also known as Jimmy Donaldson, teamed up with fellow content creator and engineer Mark Rober to unveil an inspiring fundraising campaign: #TeamWater.

Building on the tremendous success of previous collaborations, including #TeamTrees, which raised $20 million to plant 20 million trees, and #TeamSeas, which gathered $30 million to remove 30 million pounds of plastic from our oceans, they set their sights on a new and vital mission: ensuring access to clean water for everyone.

In a video announcing the campaign, MrBeast exuberantly shared, “Over 3,000 of your favorite creators are all coming together with over 3 billion followers combined. This could be one of the largest philanthropy projects in history: #TeamWater.”

Their ambitious goal was to raise $40 million throughout August, and they not only met that target but exceeded it, raising over $41.5 million for the nonprofit WaterAid. This generous support will provide clean water access to approximately 2 million individuals for years to come.

In a joint statement, Donaldson and Rober expressed their gratitude: “Reaching our $40 million goal means that millions of people will experience the life-changing impact of clean water for years to come. We are blown away by what the creator community has accomplished — we could never have achieved this on our own.”

Following the launch on August 1, creators from 144 countries came together to amplify the message through videos, livestreams, and social media, including a remarkable 17-hour livestream that alone raised $12 million.

Matt Fitzgerald, co-founder and campaign director for these impactful initiatives, remarked, “#TeamWater, #TeamSeas, and #TeamTrees have mobilized a generation of creators and their global audiences toward collective, measurable impact. #TeamWater’s work won’t stop here — every additional dollar donated means more families benefit and more futures are transformed.”

With the initial fundraising goal successfully achieved, the focus now shifts to implementation. Kelly Parsons, CEO of WaterAid America, shared the exciting news that these funds will help reach 2 million people with sustainable clean water solutions. “This will have ripple effects for decades to come. Girls and women who spend hours collecting dirty water can go to school or earn a living. It will change lives,” she noted.

The approach will involve installing solar-powered wells, gravity-fed pipelines, and rainwater harvesting systems, all tailored to meet the specific needs of each community. Parsons emphasized the importance of empowering local technicians to maintain these systems, ensuring that clean water remains accessible for the long term.

WaterAid will collaborate with implementation partners like DigDeep and GivePower to extend their reach across various communities worldwide. Transparency will be a priority, keeping the #TeamWater community informed about the progress and impact of their contributions.

Parsons encouraged continued engagement, stating, “Advocacy doesn’t end with a single campaign. There are many ways people can continue to support clean water initiatives.” She invited everyone to stay connected with WaterAid and #TeamWater for updates and to advocate for policies that prioritize clean water access.

Moreover, she highlighted the importance of sustained support, whether through monthly donations, volunteering, or hosting fundraising events. Every small action contributes to the overarching goal of ensuring clean water for all.

The efforts of some of the world’s most influential YouTubers have sparked a movement, and Parsons believes that this is just the beginning. “It will take all of us uniting around clean water to make it happen. The success of #TeamWater has been tremendous, and we’re so thankful to the creators who helped make it happen. We invite everyone to join us as we continue our mission, because we’re just getting started.”

Through collaboration, compassion, and determination, the future is bright for communities in need of clean water.
