Woman Thrilled to Find Grandparent's Wartime Locket Thanks to Kind Stranger!

In a delightful twist of fate from Canada, a lost family treasure has joyfully returned home, showcasing the magic of connection and community.

Recently, Kelly Brown, a member of the Aurora post of the Royal Canadian Legion, experienced an astonishing moment when she discovered a black-and-white photograph of her grandparents nestled inside a locket. This heartwarming discovery was made possible through a Facebook post by Alison Anne, who had purchased the locket at a thrift shop after recognizing a familiar face linked to the Royal Canadian Air Force. With a generous spirit, she sought the original owner, hoping to reunite the precious item with its rightful family.

Brown expressed her amazement, saying, “Little lost for words,” as she recalled the surreal moment of recognizing her grandparents in the locket. “Just it’s such a surreal, cool moment. The power of social media doing something good,” she reflected.

The journey of the locket began a few months prior when a branch of the re-Source Thrift Shop in Barrie received a donation from a woman whose grandmother had recently passed away. Among the items were several jewelry boxes, within which the locket was discovered, ready for a new chapter in its story.

However, the locket had been missing for many years, possibly since around 2000, when it, along with some of Brown's grandfather’s medals and personal items, disappeared during a gathering. Another possibility points to a clearing of family possessions in 2010, following the passing of Brown’s mother.

Inside the locket was a photograph of Bill Mitchell, Brown's grandfather, who proudly served as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class in the RCAF during World War II, earning honors such as the Burma Star and the 1939–45 War Medal. After his military service, he transitioned to a fulfilling career as a police detective and later opened a roller rink in Barrie. Brown often hears stories from community members who fondly remember the impact her grandparents had on their lives, highlighting their significance within the community.

With newfound excitement, Anne and Brown arranged to meet at the local Royal Canadian Legion post, where they could return the locket and share stories of family, history, and the serendipity that brought them together.

“I’m still mesmerized. I’m still in shock. Yeah. I’m like, is this for real? I had to ask people, are these my grandparents? And then I had the same pictures in my old photo albums, and I’m just. I’m in awe,” Brown shared, reflecting on the emotional reunion.

This extraordinary tale of a beloved locket serves as a beautiful reminder of the power of community and the wonders of fate.
