In a heartwarming twist of fate, a remarkable bond between two women has blossomed in a way neither could have imagined. Megan Lewis and Suzanne Koziol, though initially connected through their roles as patient and doctor, share a delightful history that dates back to Megan's childhood.
As a second grader at Fern Hill Elementary School in Pennsylvania, Megan penned a series of charming letters to her pen pal, who was nine grades ahead of her. These letters, filled with joy and dreams, reflected their youthful spirits as they exchanged their favorite foods, activities, and aspirations.
Fast forward thirty years to last Thanksgiving, when fate stepped in. Megan's mother, with a touch of nostalgia, unearthed the treasured letters from a box of childhood mementos and returned them to Megan. Curiosity led her to Google the name Suzanne Koziol, and to her amazement, she discovered a professional profile of Suzanne Koziol Pugh, her former pen pal, who had also become her OB/GYN.
Megan exclaimed, “My mouth dropped. I could not believe that my pen pal was Dr. Pugh, who delivered my kids: Caroline and Jack.” The connection was as delightful as it was surprising.
Eager to reconnect, Megan reached out to Dr. Pugh right away. Suzanne, equally astonished, shared, “I had no recollection of this. Her mom had given her a box of papers from elementary school, and in it were the letters from me. She sent me pictures of the letters and it was me! It’s such a crazy small world.”
The letters, exchanged between 1994 and 1995, were written while Dr. Pugh was a junior at West Chester East High School. During her first pregnancy, Megan and Suzanne formed a close bond, especially as Megan faced challenges throughout her nine months of carrying her daughter, Caroline. Dr. Pugh ensured she would be the physician present for the delivery, and she made the same promise when Megan welcomed her son, Jack.
Reflecting on their intertwined paths, Dr. Pugh remarked, “It really made us feel like I was meant to take care of her and we were meant to play a role in each other’s lives.”
This delightful reunion of past and present is a testament to the beautiful connections we form throughout our lives, often in the most unexpected ways.
