Surgeon Saves Teen Immigrant's Life and NowThey Operate Together for Charity in Ethiopia

The journey of Mesfin Yana is a shining example of resilience and the profound impact of kindness. Born 41 years ago in a village in Ethiopia, Mesfin faced many challenges early in life, including a serious health condition that would change his fate forever.

His story took a remarkable turn when he encountered Dr. Jim Kauten, a compassionate cardiothoracic surgeon, during a critical moment in his life. Mesfin was brought to Atlanta for life-saving open-heart surgery, a journey facilitated by the generosity of organizations like Children’s Cross Connection International. This moment marked the beginning of a beautiful bond between patient and physician, rooted in mutual respect and gratitude.

Initially, Mesfin struggled with rheumatic fever, which stemmed from a cough that escalated into a serious health issue. It was at Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Addis Ababa that he met American doctor Rick Hodes. Dr. Hodes has dedicated his life to helping children with heart diseases, demonstrating that a little compassion can lead to monumental changes in lives.

Undergoing surgery at Piedmont Heart Institute, Mesfin had his mitral valve repaired by Dr. Kauten. After this life-changing operation, he was encouraged to stay with a host family nearby for his recovery, a decision that allowed him to receive additional care. However, upon returning to Ethiopia, he faced another challenge—endocarditis, which required him to return to the United States for a second surgery. This time, the valve needed replacement, highlighting the importance of continued care and the resources available in the U.S.

During this phase of his journey, Mesfin was embraced by Dr. Allen Dollar, his cardiologist, who not only treated him but also welcomed him into his home. Mesfin expressed his heartfelt gratitude, stating, “I’m grateful for my family, for just being in the United States. It’s a resurrection for me. You know, I was once lost, dead, and I was resurrected and I’m living a new life.”

With renewed hope and determination, Mesfin dedicated himself to his education, ultimately becoming a healthcare professional at Georgia State University. It was there that he met his wife, Lyerusalem, and together they have built a loving family with two wonderful children.

Mesfin’s journey continued as he trained to become a perfusionist at the Texas Heart Institute, before securing a position at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he plays a critical role in complex cardiac surgeries. His commitment to helping others never waned, leading him to return to Ethiopia on mission trips with the nonprofit Heart Attack Ethiopia. During one of these trips, he surprised Dr. Kauten, showcasing his desire to give back to the community that once supported him.

Dr. Kauten fondly remarked on this reunion, recognizing the full circle of Mesfin’s journey: “For him to be able to pay back to his community services that he received in the United States, and he was able to pay it back in Ethiopia.”

In addition to performing surgeries, Mesfin serves as a vital communicator between volunteer surgeons and patients, ensuring that the younger generation of children can understand and connect with their caregivers. His ability to bridge this gap brings comfort and hope, reflecting the kindness he received throughout his life.

Now residing in the U.S. with his family, Mesfin embodies gratitude and the power of compassion. His story is a testament to the goodness that exists in the world and serves as an inspiration to us all.
