A remarkable event took place in Wisconsin as the nonprofit organization Pillars received an incredible gift: the largest property donation in its history. This generous contribution came from the estate of the late Richard “Dick” Reetz, a beloved landlord who passed away in June at the age of 97.
Reetz's heartfelt donation includes his entire rental estate, comprising 20 units across 10 properties, which has significantly enhanced Pillars' efforts by increasing its property portfolio by 26%. This expansion means that more individuals and families can find the stable housing they need.
Pillars is dedicated to addressing the housing crisis by providing affordable housing options and helping people stay out of shelters. Currently, they manage numerous affordable housing properties near Appleton, Wisconsin, and operate two crisis housing centers that support around 140 people at any given time. With Reetz's generous gift, Pillars will be able to extend its reach even further, providing vital housing solutions for those in need.
"This transformative gift expands Pillars’ reach in a meaningful way, helping to serve more individuals and families working toward stability and a place to call home," remarked Steve Williams, the Board President of Pillars.
Richard Reetz spent his entire life in Appleton, where he was a landlord for over 50 years. According to his obituary, he conducted his rental business based on trust and goodwill, often putting the needs of his tenants above his own. This compassionate approach was evident in his desire to support those looking to establish themselves and create a stable life.
“Dick gave people a chance when others would not,” his stepson Joe Frank shared. “He cared about his tenants’ stories and wanted to help get them on their feet. He had a genuine interest in people.”
In addition to being a dedicated landlord, Reetz was the owner of Reetz Engineering, where he excelled in building strong business relationships and supporting local charities. His commitment to the community continued even after his passing, as he established various charitable funds with the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region, Inc.
The significance of Reetz's donation cannot be overstated. Williams emphasized the ongoing need for housing in the area, stating, “there is no end to the need for housing here.” For the current tenants of Reetz's properties, Pillars will work diligently to find suitable new homes, ensuring that their transitions are as smooth as possible. The organization plans to integrate the properties thoughtfully, considering the unique situations of each tenant.
Frank noted that in the latter part of Reetz's life, developers sought to purchase his properties, but selling was not the legacy he envisioned. “Donating these units to Pillars was the only solution he had in his heart,” Frank said. “The last thing he wanted was to displace people.”
With the addition of these new properties, Pillars estimates that it will be able to support around 40 more individuals in their housing efforts. “Pillars is very proud to carry on Richard’s legacy of providing housing to those who need it at an affordable level,” said executive director Lisa Strandberg.
The mission of Pillars aligns beautifully with Reetz's vision, as they tackle the root causes of homelessness through the provision of housing. Williams added, “It really aligns with our mission to tackle the main cause of homelessness, which is housing.”
In honor of Reetz, his family has encouraged friends and loved ones to contribute to his favorite charitable organizations instead of sending flowers, fostering a legacy of kindness and generosity. “By expanding access to stable, affordable housing, Pillars is helping more individuals and families build a foundation for long-term success and wellbeing,” said Appleton Community Development Director Kara Homan.
“This is the kind of partnership and generosity that truly moves our community forward.” Through this collaboration, the spirit of generosity thrives, making a positive impact on the lives of many.
