Craig Campbell, a devoted dog lover from Cochrane, near Calgary, recently experienced an incredible moment of courage and loyalty from his 10-year-old Doberman, Night, who bravely intervened during a potentially dangerous encounter with a bear.

On a routine walk along a familiar trail, Craig and Night found themselves in an unexpected situation when a grizzly bear and her two cubs unexpectedly appeared in the bushes. Although Craig carried bear spray for protection, he quickly realized that accessing it in such a tense moment would be a daunting task. “I managed two thoughts,” he later shared, reflecting on the experience. “First of all, I said to myself, ‘This can’t be happening.’ And then I realized I wasn’t going to get the bear spray out (in time) and I said to myself, ‘I’m about to die.’”

In that critical moment, Night sprang into action. With remarkable bravery, he positioned himself between Craig and the towering bear, who stood at an impressive 7 feet on its hind legs. This courageous act provided just enough time for Craig to prepare himself, and fortunately, the bear chose to retreat back to her cubs.

Craig attributes Night’s heroic behavior to his extensive training in the German sport of Schutzhund, which is often used to prepare dogs for roles in law enforcement. “He is a very brave dog,” Craig expressed with pride. “To have an animal that literally stood between me and death, there’s no better friend than that.”

In recognition of Night’s bravery, he was honored with an award in Purina’s Animal Hall of Fame for 2025, a prestigious accolade celebrating remarkable pets in Canada. The honor includes a medallion, a special ceremony in Toronto, and a year’s supply of pet food.
