Viral Red Baron Worker Shares Uplifting Final Message With Supporters

Nearly $800,000 in Support Leaves Red Baron Worker Grateful—and Encouraging Kindness for Others

After strangers rallied to raise nearly $800,000 for his family, a Red Baron employee known as Walt Z is sharing his gratitude and encouraging supporters to extend that generosity to other families in need.

The GoFundMe campaign reached $787,477 as of Thursday before donations were paused. For Walt, the extraordinary response has brought not only financial support but also something precious: more time at home with his family.

“Your kind words have meant the world to my family and I this past week. I still cannot believe how much you have all rallied behind us, and I can never thank you enough. I’ve been able to spend lots of extra time at home with my family this week,” he wrote in an update on the fundraiser.

The campaign was organized by Luke Oakenshield, a military veteran from Chandler, Arizona, who had never met Walt before launching the effort. Their connection has since grown into a friendship.

“I’ve also stayed in touch with Luke, and I look forward to continuing that friendship as he navigates all the blessings that have come his way,” Walt wrote.

The wave of generosity began after a video captured a difficult moment during Walt’s workday. While he was stocking freezer shelves in his Red Baron uniform, a prankster asked him for the time. When Walt pulled out his smartphone, the person used another phone and a prerecorded Apple Pay sound to pretend to take money from him.

Walt’s response revealed the pressures he was carrying as a working father of four. He explained that his shift had already run late, his children had gone to bed without him, and another demanding day would begin early the next morning.

“I got kids at home that went to bed without me right now! I was supposed to be off an hour ago! I gotta wake up at 5 in the morning and do 10 more stores!” he said in the video.

Although the people involved described the encounter as a joke, Walt made clear that his worries about providing for his family—including paying the mortgage—were real.

The video first appeared on Instagram before spreading across several social media platforms. The account that originally posted it was later deactivated. As the footage circulated, supporters came together through Oakenshield’s fundraiser to offer Walt and his family help.

Now, after a week of overwhelming support, Walt is choosing privacy and time with his loved ones. He said he would not give interviews to protect his family’s “safety and privacy.”

With donations paused, he encouraged anyone still wishing to contribute to “consider supporting another fundraiser, a local charity, or a church helping families in need this holiday season.”

His final update closed with appreciation for the people who had turned a painful encounter into an outpouring of care.

“This will be my last update as I focus on my family, and we enjoy the holidays together,” he wrote. “Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, and for making my family feel so supported. We will never forget it.”
