A breathtaking stretch of England’s coastline has been joyfully preserved for future generations, thanks to the thoughtful legacy of a beloved local vicar who cherished his walks in this stunning landscape.
The National Trust has happily acquired 34 acres of land near the historic town of Fowey in Cornwall, made possible by a generous bequest from Reverend Anthony Mapplebeck. His donation, intended for the Trust’s ‘Neptune Coastline Campaign’ initiated in the 1960s, has now been utilized to secure a beautiful area known as Alldays Field, ensuring the protection of its natural habitat and continued public access.

The significance of this acquisition is enhanced by the site’s unique position, bordered by Trust-owned countryside on three sides, while the sea graces its southern boundary. Andy Simmons, the National Trust Ranger for South East Cornwall, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “By joining this land with what’s around it, we can look after the coast as a whole, supporting wildlife, keeping paths open, and ensuring this landscape stays welcoming and alive for everyone who visits.”
The fact that this land was secured through the generosity of someone who devoted his life to serving the Cornish community and who enjoyed the coastal paths himself makes it all the more special.
Although Reverend Mapplebeck was born in Surrey, his heart and ministry were deeply rooted in Cornwall, where he developed a profound connection with the coastline. An educated man from Cambridge in the 1940s, he was known for his diligence and quiet dedication to his duties. Living modestly with his mother near the cherished coast and the picturesque town of Fowey, he touched the lives of many parishioners, christening babies and supporting community events with unwavering commitment.
The newly acquired Alldays Field guarantees uninterrupted access along this iconic section of the South West Coast Path, allowing walkers to continue enjoying the dramatic beauty of the area for years to come.
The Neptune Coastline Campaign continues to play a vital role in safeguarding hundreds of miles of coastline across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with Reverend Mapplebeck’s legacy living on beautifully within this mission.
This heartwarming story highlights the power of generosity and the lasting impact one individual can have on the community and the natural world.
