A School Named for the Woman Who Helped Make It Feel Like Home
For 39 years, Marilyn Hampton helped care for Aubrey Independent School District in Texas. Now the district is honoring the retired custodian in a way she never expected: its new elementary school will bear her name.
Known affectionately as “Miss Marilyn,” Hampton did far more than keep the buildings clean. She brought students school supplies, helped them study, worked the ticket booth at football games and offered encouragement when they needed it. “She is truly Aubrey ISD,” Superintendent Dr. Shannon Saylor told WFAA News.
The recognition is especially meaningful to Hampton. She was the first of seven siblings to finish high school, but because she did not go to college, she sometimes felt she had fallen short. Her decades of care for the school community told a different story. At 76, she continues to help care for young children at the district’s Early Bird Learning Center.
District leaders revealed their plans at a school board meeting. Hampton thought she had been invited to discuss challenges surrounding the opening of a new K–5 school. Instead, she was asked to unroll a carpet bearing the words “Marilyn Hampton Elementary School.”
“Oh, my goodness,” she said through tears. “Oh God, y’all are the best.” Later, she reflected: “It’s an honor that I never thought in my lifetime I would have seen. It’s not anything I could have even imagined.”
A Missouri school district made a similar choice in 2024, naming a new K–8 building for longtime custodian Claudene Wilson. Alongside her custodial work, Wilson had stepped in as a plumber, landscaper, bus driver, cafeteria worker and welcoming presence for students.
For Hampton, the school’s name celebrates what generations of children and colleagues have known: the kindness she brought to their days made a lasting difference.
