Escaping an abusive relationship is an important step toward a brighter future, and while the thought of packing up and moving can feel overwhelming, there’s hope on the horizon. With the wonderful support of Meathead Movers, leaving behind a difficult situation becomes a much easier journey—and the best part is, it comes at no cost.
For the past 25 years, California’s largest independently-owned moving company has been a beacon of support for those seeking to end domestic violence. They generously offer their moving services free of charge to individuals in need, making it possible for them to embark on a new chapter in their lives.
In a heartwarming initiative launched in 2015, Meathead Movers formed a coalition that has inspired eight other moving companies across the United States to join in their mission of compassion. The program, known as #MoveToEndDV, has sparked a remarkable movement, encouraging over 200 businesses to pledge their services—ranging from moving assistance to self-storage and even security services in three California cities.
Throughout the past year, Meathead Movers has proudly completed 106 moves related to domestic violence, including eight emergency relocations in areas such as San Luis Obispo, Ventura County, Orange County, Fresno, and Bakersfield. This incredible work exemplifies the positive impact that businesses can have within their communities.
Aaron and Evan Steed, the brothers who founded Meathead Movers, have created a powerful model of community service through their dedication. Aaron shared, “These moves became very personal to us,” expressing how this mission has fostered a sense of pride among employees and has become integral to the company’s values.
Inspired by their work, a local moving company in Fort Worth, Texas, reached out to Aaron for guidance on how to contribute. Aaron proposed that they volunteer one day per month, allowing their team to use their skills to support those in need. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with nearly the entire team stepping up to help.
Now, Veterans Moving America is making a meaningful difference in Fort Worth, collaborating with shelters to provide moving services for survivors and creating a wave of goodwill in their community.
Other wonderful companies that have joined the #MoveToEndDV initiative include:
- Veterans Moving America – Fort Worth
- Helping Hands Moving and Maids – Salt Lake City, Utah
- We Help! Cincinnati Movers – Cincinnati, Ohio
- Elite Moving Services – Des Moines, Iowa
- Gentle Giant Moving Company – Boston, Massachusetts
- Parks Moving & Storage – Pittsburgh, Harrisburg & State College, Pennsylvania
- Always Professional Moving – Phoenix, Arizona
- Brown Box Movers – Dallas, Texas
The process is designed to ensure safety and support for those seeking assistance. Moving companies collaborate with local domestic violence prevention shelters to screen requests for help, ensuring that every individual—regardless of gender—receives the care they need throughout their transition.
“What’s good about that is they can vet the requests for help, support the women with counseling, and ensure that necessary precautions are in place,” Aaron explained. This thoughtful approach enhances the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
In 2020, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence took the reins of the #MoveToEndDV initiative, bringing national resources and support to this vital program. This partnership has allowed Meathead Movers to extend their reach, helping even more individuals affected by domestic violence.
If you or your business can contribute through donations of products, services, or funding for #MoveToEndDV—whether it's moving support, security services, handyman work, or auto repair—you can find more information on their website.
This spirit of generosity is truly infectious, motivating employees and communities to engage in acts of kindness that resonate far and wide.
In addition to this inspiring initiative, there are many encouraging stories of goodwill, such as the creation of the sixth Tiny Home Village dedicated to ending homelessness for veterans across the United States and Lowe’s donation of 100 tiny homes to families affected by hurricanes.
Aaron beautifully summed up the essence of this movement: “These women are completely abandoning their life as they know it and trying to rebuild from scratch, and businesses are rallying together for them. We want them to know that people in the community have their back. We want to do this in communities all over the country.”
Let’s share this uplifting story with friends and anyone who might benefit from this message of hope and support. Together, we can help create a world where kindness and compassion flourish.
