Jase Garland's dream was blossoming into reality on a magical evening under the stadium lights in Carolina. The excitement in the air was palpable as fans donned their beloved black and blue colors, eagerly cheering on their team. For 12-year-old Jase, this was no ordinary night; he was stepping onto the field as part of the Carolina Panthers.
This experience was particularly special for Jase, who had faced significant challenges over the past couple of years. His journey began when his mother, Erin, noticed unusual bruising on her son. After a series of medical appointments, Jase was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare condition affecting the bone marrow that could lead to leukemia. To combat this, he required a bone marrow transplant.
Last year, after successfully undergoing the transplant, Jase received a wonderful surprise from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They offered him the chance to select a dream that would inspire him during his recovery, giving him a bright light to look forward to amidst the routine of doctor visits. Without hesitation, Jase chose to become the quarterback for the Carolina Panthers.
His imagination filled with visions of wearing the team's vibrant colors, that dream fueled him through every hardship and moment of discomfort he faced.
With the assistance of Make-A-Wish and the Carolina Panthers, Jase's dream came to life this month. As he prepared to transition into seventh grade, he suited up to join his favorite team on the field.
The experience was a whirlwind of joy. Jase met head coach Dave Canales, along with Panthers quarterbacks Bryce Young and Andy Dalton. He even signed a contract with the team’s general manager, Dan Morgan, and collaborated with offensive coordinator Brad Idzik to draw up a play. Jase hit the weight room with players, met the lively team mascot SirPurr, and proudly received his personalized helmet and jersey, complete with the number 26 emblazoned on the back.
During the Panthers’ Fan Fest on August 2nd, the moment arrived when Jase was sent onto the field during an intra-squad scrimmage. He took a handoff just inside the 10-yard line, sprinting around the left end and heading straight for the end zone.
Touchdown!
The celebration that followed was heartwarming, as teammates gathered around him to rejoice in this incredible moment. Jase couldn’t resist showcasing a few dance moves, and the joy of the occasion was amplified when center Austin Corbett lifted him into the air, reminiscent of the iconic scene with baby Simba in The Lion King.
In that moment, all worries faded away, replaced by pure happiness. Jase’s touchdown represented not just a victory on the field, but also a testament to his resilience throughout his journey.
“It sounds maybe cliché,” Erin Garland reflected in a feature by the Carolina Panthers, “but he’s just taking this like a champ because he’s had to be away from everybody for so long. I’m very impressed by him.”
The partnership between the Carolina Panthers and the Make-A-Wish Foundation provided Jase with a platform to pursue his dreams. When the opportunity arose on the field, Jase faced it with the same determination he had shown since receiving his challenging diagnosis, racing past every obstacle and celebrating his triumph.
This inspiring story is a reminder of the power of dreams and the goodness that can flourish in the face of adversity.
