Miami Recycling Company Brings New Life to Old Shoes!

In the vibrant Little Haiti neighborhood of Miami, a wonderful initiative is taking place at Sneaker Impact, where thousands of donated sneakers are joyfully sorted with a mission to minimize waste. This local business is dedicated to finding new homes for every shoe, whether they are in pristine condition or a bit worn. Each pair holds potential—either as recycled materials or as treasures for new owners who will cherish and continue to use them.

Founded by an environmentally conscious entrepreneur, Sneaker Impact strives to offer a sustainable alternative to the traditional footwear market. The founder, Moe Hachem, emphasizes the importance of accountability, stating, "It’s all about accountability, sending the right product to the right market." He highlights that sneakers can be essential in developing regions, serving as a means of transportation for those in need.

Every year, Sneaker Impact receives an impressive one million pairs of shoes, thanks to the help of dedicated volunteers from local running clubs. This generous influx allows the organization to focus on the labor of sorting and redistributing, rather than worrying about sourcing materials.

Once the shoes arrive at the Little Haiti facility, they are organized based on various criteria and carefully packed into bags of 200 pairs, ready to be shipped globally for resale. Hachem notes the dual benefit of this process: "You’re not only reducing waste here at home, you are creating microbusiness opportunities in a developing country."

For those shoes that cannot be reused, Sneaker Impact has a thoughtful plan in place. They are shredded and sorted into foam and fabric, which are then sold as raw materials for new products, such as carpet mats and floor mats.

The organization has also introduced a gym sandal made from 85% sneaker foam. This innovative product demonstrates durability, flexibility, and weather resistance, proving that even the most humble materials can be transformed into something fantastic.

Sneaker Impact is a shining example of how a local initiative can make a significant positive impact on both the environment and communities around the world. By choosing to support them, you are not only promoting sustainability but also spreading goodness and opportunity.
