Woman Saves Teen Baseball Player with 40-Year-Old CPR Skills

When Johnette Wilmot learned CPR at the age of 17, she never anticipated that she would use it decades later. Yet, just recently, she found herself in a situation where her training came rushing back to her, as if no time had passed.

Evan Tucker, a bright 15-year-old who had just wrapped up his freshman baseball season at Pinson Valley High School in Alabama, faced a sudden and serious challenge during a travel team tryout. As he practiced on the field, he unexpectedly collapsed, leaving spectators puzzled. While some thought he might have been struck by a ball, others speculated that he was having a seizure. The truth, however, was far more alarming—he was experiencing cardiac arrest.

In that critical moment, Johnette, who was present to support her own son, quickly sprang into action. She recalled her CPR training instinctively, and with determination, rushed to Evan's side. “I learned CPR in high school and I’ve never had to use it in 40 years. I just kept humming ‘Stayin’ Alive,’” she shared with WBRC News, referring to the iconic Bee Gees song that provides an excellent rhythm for chest compressions.

For eight intense minutes, Johnette performed CPR, keeping hope alive until the ambulance arrived. Once at Children’s Hospital, medical professionals worked diligently to revive Evan's heart. Their efforts were successful, and after a few days, Evan's condition stabilized. With continued physical therapy, he is on a promising path to a full recovery. A family friend even initiated a GoFundMe campaign to help alleviate the financial strain of his medical expenses.

Reflecting on the experience, Evan’s mother, Samantha, attributes his survival to a mix of divine intervention and the timely actions of Johnette. "Miracles happen,” she expressed. “If it hadn’t been for Johnette… my son would not be here today.”

This heartwarming story serves as a beautiful reminder of the impact one person can have in a moment of crisis, and it inspires us all to consider the importance of CPR training. Let's spread the word and remind our friends about the life-saving skills that can make a difference when it matters most.
