In a heartwarming tale of love and resilience, a mother’s letter has journeyed across time and distance, ultimately reaching her son after 24 years. Jevon Castrillo’s mother, Cee Cee Lyles, penned this touching note back in March 2001, celebrating a significant milestone in her son’s early education. Jevon had just read a book from cover to cover, and Cee Cee wanted to share this joyful achievement with his kindergarten teacher, Tammy Thurman.
“Dear Ms. Thurman,” she wrote, “Jevon read a book last night that he brought home from the library. He read it from cover to cover. I told him I would write you a note and tell you what an outstanding job he did. We are very proud of him and will continue to work with him at home. Again, thank you for your dedication and courage for the job that you do.”
This beautiful letter was meant to convey the pride and hope that every parent feels for their child’s successes. Tragically, the course of history shifted just months later when Cee Cee was aboard United Flight 93 during the September 11 attacks. In a moment of bravery, she called her husband to express that the passengers were ready to fight back against their hijackers. Thanks to her courage and the actions of others on the flight, they redirected the plane, preventing further tragedy.
Although Jevon lost his mother that day, Ms. Thurman held onto the letter, cherishing it over the years. This September, she handed it over to reporter Jon Shainman, who committed to delivering it to Jevon, now a father himself.
The reunion with the letter took place this past September, bringing a wave of emotions with it. Ms. Thurman included a class photo of young Jevon, reminding everyone of the bright spirit he was. “As a mom, I know you need to see those words from your mom,” she shared with him, emphasizing the loving nature of Cee Cee.
When Jevon opened the letter and read his mother’s encouraging words, it was a moment filled with bittersweet joy. “It’s very touching,” he remarked, reflecting on the sweetness of her message, which resonated deeply with him.
Now a father to a three-month-old, Jevon is inspired to carry on his mother’s legacy of pride and love in his own parenting. The letter that found its way back to him after so many years serves as a tangible reminder of his mother’s unwavering support.
In this story, we see the power of love, the impact of small gestures, and the enduring connections that bind us to those we cherish. This is a testament to the goodness in our lives and the strength we can draw from our memories.
