Rescued dog from hurricane finds loving home, sparks new pet law!

On October 9, 2024, as Hurricane Milton made its way toward Florida, the Florida Highway Patrol-Tampa shared an uplifting video that touched the hearts of many. In this moving clip, a kind state trooper approached a frightened bull terrier found chained to a fence and surrounded by water.

With a gentle tone, the trooper reassured the scared dog, saying, “It’s okay, buddy. I don’t blame you, it’s okay.” This heartfelt moment quickly resonated online, gathering over 12 million views on social media platform X, where it was accompanied by the important message: “Do NOT do this to your pets please.”

Thankfully, the bull terrier, affectionately named “Trooper,” began to trust the trooper and was soon taken to a local veterinarian, where he received a clean bill of health. The Leon County Humane Society then stepped in to provide Trooper with the care and love he needed. For two months, they nurtured him and shared his story, and in December, they joyfully announced that Trooper had found his forever home.

Trooper's new dad proudly held up a blue collar with a tag that read “TROOPER.” According to the Leon County Humane Society, “From the moment he was introduced to his new Mom and Dad, you could see that it was a perfect match.” Unlike his earlier anxious encounters, Trooper felt an immediate sense of comfort with Frank and Carla. He eagerly accepted a toy they offered, playfully tearing it apart before returning for affection and cuddles.

The rescue organization noted that Trooper’s inspiring story drew attention from potential adopters across the country. “There were no shortages of applications for Trooper,” they shared. “Dog lovers nationwide were emailing to inquire about adopting this famous dog who had been through so much.” After careful consideration, the team felt confident they had made the right choice in finding a loving home for Trooper.

Trooper's influence didn’t stop with his adoption. On May 28, the Florida Senate passed “Trooper’s Law” unanimously, making it a third-degree felony to abandon or restrain pets during natural disasters. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his pride in signing this legislation, stating, “Across Florida, we have seen horrifying instances of animal cruelty that demand a stronger response.” He reinforced the state’s commitment to protecting animals, saying, “Florida stands by man’s best friend.”

If approved by the House of Representatives, these compassionate laws will come into effect on October 1, 2025.

Following the passage of “Trooper’s Law,” Trooper received recognition from the popular social media account WeRateDogs, which awarded him a delightful “14/10” star rating for his inspiring journey. This account is dedicated to sharing heartwarming dog stories and supports shelter dogs through the 15/10 Foundation, which helps dogs with behavioral or medical issues find homes.

“This is Trooper,” they posted on Instagram. “Last October, he was rescued from knee-deep water during Hurricane Milton in Florida. He had been tied to a fence post and abandoned by his previous owners. Fortunately, Trooper has since found a loving family to call his own, and his legacy is helping to prevent other dogs from facing the same abuse he experienced.” The comments section overflowed with positivity and support from users celebrating Trooper’s happy ending.

As Trooper’s story continues to inspire new laws and touch the lives of many, the Leon County Humane Society reminds the public that over 3.3 million shelter dogs across the nation share similar heartbreaking experiences. They encourage everyone to contribute by adopting, fostering, volunteering, or donating.

“Your support helps us jump to the aid of animals in need and provide routine and often lifesaving care,” they said. “Tell ‘Em Trooper Sent You.”

In a world where kindness prevails, Trooper’s journey is a beautiful reminder of the positive impact we can all make.
