In a remarkable journey dedicated to spreading peace, an abandoned dog has found a new purpose alongside a group of dedicated Buddhist monks. This heartwarming tale unfolded during a 112-day peace walk in India, where the monks encountered a loyal friend, later named Aloka, who eagerly joined their mission.
Aloka, thought to be an Indian Pariah breed, quickly became an integral part of the group, showcasing his unwavering spirit as he walked alongside the monks to promote messages of unity and compassion. Despite facing challenges, including being hit by a car and battling illness, Aloka’s resilience shone brightly. When the monks offered him a ride in a truck to escape the rigors of the walk, he chose to leap out and rejoin his companions, embodying the spirit of perseverance.
One of the monks shared a touching sentiment in a TikTok video, stating, “He followed us the whole time. He’s a true hero. He wanted to walk. That inspires a lot.”
Now, Aloka and the monks from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana in Fort Worth, Texas, have embarked on a new, ambitious journey. In October, they set off on a 2,300-mile trek towards Washington, D.C., eager to spread their message of compassion and togetherness. Texas Representative Nicole Collier expressed her admiration for their mission, saying, “It really touches the hearts and minds of people. We live in a time when the noise often drowns out understanding, where division can feel louder than unity—but this is what the community and interfaith solidarity looks like.”
The journey, spanning 10 states over 110 days, aims to conclude in the nation’s capital by February. By late December, they had made it to Atlanta, with updates shared through a live tracker on Facebook and on social media platforms. Aloka even has his own Instagram account, where followers can keep up with his adventures.
Throughout their trek, the monks have been met with warmth and kindness from strangers. A Dairy Queen in Texas treated them to ice cream, ensuring Aloka enjoyed some too. In Alabama, doctors offered complimentary checkups, and crowds gathered to meet the monks and share meals, spreading goodwill as they moved closer to their destination.
As the official Walk for Peace Instagram beautifully stated, “It’s a journey filled with both known and unforeseen challenges. Yet, with hearts anchored in calmness and minds set firmly on their purpose, the monks move forward—step by step—embodying peace, resilience, and unwavering determination on their sacred path toward the White House.”
Aloka, their steadfast furry companion, continues to play a crucial role in this uplifting mission. “Aloka is a very good boy helping to carry the message of peace and harmony,” always watching over his friends as they embark on this inspiring journey together.
