Heroic Pup Sharwood Sets World Record for Donating Blood!

Did you know that dogs have the incredible ability to donate blood? While we often think of blood transfusions as primarily a human necessity, our furry friends can also face situations where this gift is needed, whether due to injuries or specific health conditions. One particularly remarkable dog, Sharwood, an 8-year-old Gordon setter from England, has made a significant impact by saving the lives of over 168 dogs through his generous donations. His outstanding contributions even earned him a Guinness World Record for the most times a dog has given blood!

On July 13, 2024, Sharwood completed his 40th donation with the Pet Blood Bank U.K., becoming the first dog in the country to achieve this milestone. His heroism led him to be named a finalist for the prestigious 2025 Crufts Hero Award. Although he didn’t take home the trophy, the regional coordinator for the blood bank, Adelle Fallows, highlighted just how vital his donations have been in a heartfelt nomination video.

“Our donor dogs are truly special,” said Fallows. “They step up to help those dogs in need, whether they’ve been in accidents or are facing serious health challenges.”

According to Sue Mitchell, Sharwood’s devoted owner, each pint of blood he donates can save up to four other pups! She passionately shared, “As a dog owner, I know how much we love our dogs. It’s crucial to remember that our pets might one day need a transfusion; having suitable dogs ready to help is invaluable.”

Sharwood’s journey as a blood donor began when he was just a puppy, and he embraced the experience with remarkable calmness. Since his first donation in 2017, he has been a regular contributor, visiting the blood bank every 8 to 10 weeks. His laid-back nature has made the process enjoyable, and he receives plenty of love and rewards after each visit.

Sharwood is not alone in his noble efforts; Mitchell also has two other Gordon setters, Brinjal and Baxter, who have made their own contributions, donating 16 and 33 times, respectively. To be eligible to donate at the Pet Blood Bank U.K., dogs must be between 1 and 8 years old, weigh over 55 pounds, and be healthy and confident.

The donation process is designed to be as comfortable as possible for the dogs. Mitchell explained, “People are often surprised at how straightforward it is. The dogs receive a warm welcome, a health check, and then their blood is taken. It’s a great way to ensure they’re healthy while helping others.”

For healthy, confident dogs, the rewards of donating blood are immense. For instance, a dachshund named Sizzle, who has hemophilia and requires regular transfusions, received his first from Sharwood. His owner, Emma Gray, noted, “That donation was life-changing for us.”

As Sharwood has reached the maximum age for dog donors, he has now retired, celebrated with a gold medal from the blood bank. In this new chapter of his life, he can enjoy the simple joys of exercise, delicious food, and the company of his loved ones, all while leaving behind a legacy of lifesaving contributions.
