In a heartwarming display of heroism near Sacramento, California, a group of remarkable individuals came together to help during a challenging moment. As a REACH Air Medical Services helicopter was descending toward Highway 50, an 8-lane interstate bustling with commuters, it ultimately crashed, creating a scene that would soon be filled with courage and kindness.

Drivers on the highway quickly transformed into everyday heroes, abandoning their vehicles to rush to the site of the incident. A dramatic video captured the moment when over a dozen good Samaritans united in their effort to assist, lifting one side of the helicopter to free at least one of the three individuals aboard just as first responders arrived at 7:00 p.m. on that fateful Monday.

Kenneth De Crescenzo, whose wife recorded the video, shared his thoughts about the unfolding events with a local ABC affiliate. He remarked, “When it was coming down, I looked at it and said, ‘This isn’t good,’ but when people were needed, they all stepped up.” Their collective strength was truly inspiring, as it took the coordinated effort of around 15 people to successfully push the helicopter enough to allow for a rescue.

Fortunately, the pilot skillfully avoided hitting any vehicles, and the helicopter's crash-resistant fuel tank prevented a fire from igniting. While the pilot, a paramedic, and a nurse on board were in critical condition after the crash, the quick actions of the bystanders likely played a crucial role in saving lives.

The crew members were no strangers to emergency situations. Chad Millward, the pilot, had previously saved 15 lives during a wildfire in 2017. Susan Smith, a nurse, and Margaret ‘DeDe’ David, a paramedic, are now on the road to recovery, bringing a sense of relief to their families and loved ones.

In a touching statement, Smith’s family expressed their gratitude: “We would like to take the time to sincerely thank the first responders on scene, as well as the everyday citizen heroes that jumped into action to help lift an entire aircraft off of Susie so she could begin receiving immediate care at the scene.” They concluded with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the incredible support they received, stating, “It was truly amazing.”
