This was the case for Hudson, whose parents are immensely grateful for the keen eye of his teacher. Twyla noticed that Hudson wasn’t running as quickly as his classmates and observed that he was using a technique known as the Gower’s maneuver to stand up, which is not typical for children his age.

With her experience and intuition, Twyla gently approached Hudson’s parents to share her observations, encouraging them to consult a specialist. She recalled how Hudson would walk into the classroom with a slow gait, often needing assistance from his mom or grandma. When Hudson visited a neurologist, he received a diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a condition that affects muscle strength and mobility. His mother expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating that without Twyla’s insights, Hudson might have gone undiagnosed for much longer, delaying essential early interventions.

Thanks to that early diagnosis, Hudson was able to receive groundbreaking treatment in 2023—he became one of the first children in the country to be treated with Elevidys, the first FDA-approved gene therapy for Duchenne. This treatment has given Hudson and his family renewed hope for the future.

Hudson’s mother emphasized the significant role Twyla played in their journey, believing wholeheartedly that her presence in their lives was a blessing that changed Hudson’s trajectory. Almost four years later, Hudson is enjoying his childhood, thriving because of the early support he received.
