At just 12 years old, Nathan Yuill is a beacon of hope and kindness. After facing the challenges of a stage-4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis, Nathan is now just two treatment courses away from what everyone hopes will be a joyous remission announcement.
Before he concluded his time at Providence Alaska Children’s Hospital, Nathan took it upon himself to spread joy to his fellow young patients by raising an impressive $2,000. His goal? To provide nearly every child in the hospital with a delightful Easter basket brimming with gifts and treats.
Nicki Thurwanger, the Clinical Nurse Manager of Pediatrics at Providence, shared her delight at the sight of overflowing carts filled with these colorful baskets, all generously donated and assembled by compassionate community members. She expressed the importance of such gestures: “When the kiddos are here, every day becomes challenging and hard, and you look for the little things that make you be a kid. And so I think that’s what things like this give back is, yes, you’re in the hospital, but you’re a kid, and you get to still be a kid when you’re here.”
Nathan’s mother, Dena Yuill, was overwhelmed by the community's response to her son's initiative, noting how the donations exceeded their expectations within just a day. “He’s amazing. I wish I had half the strength he does,” she remarked, highlighting the inspiring spirit of her son.
In total, 124 cheerful baskets were distributed just in time for Good Friday, bringing smiles to children at both Providence and the nearby Alaska Native Medical Center.
Nathan's thoughtful act has reminded everyone that even during tough times, children deserve moments of joy and the chance to simply be kids. Thanks to Nathan, many young patients can feel the warmth of Easter spirit, turning their hospital experience into something a little brighter.
