This nonprofit makes sure widows and widowers get flowers on Valentine’s Day

Catherine Szabad has a heartfelt understanding of the challenges that holidays can pose for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

Reflecting on her journey, Szabad shared, “After losing my child, I experienced a silence I never expected — the world didn’t seem to notice that everything had changed.” This profound realization ignited a passionate mission within her to create something truly special for those navigating similar grief.

Thus, Hearts in Bloom was born in Buffalo, New York, with a beautiful vision: to deliver free bouquets and gifts to widows and widowers on Valentine’s Day. In just its second year, the initiative blossomed with the support of over 300 volunteers, enabling the organization to triple the number of individuals who were touched by their kindness.

This year, one of the dedicated volunteers, Morgan Cabana, had the privilege of delivering flowers to Rita Costantino, who lost her beloved husband of 51 years in May. Costantino shared her feelings with local news, saying, “Today is Valentine’s Day, my husband's birthday is February 20th, so I’m dealing with a couple of things in February.”

For Cabana, participating in Hearts in Bloom was a fulfilling way to spend her day. She expressed, “There’s a sense of community and being able to bring a smile to those where this day may not be just passing by like the rest of us.”

In 2025, Hearts in Bloom brightened Valentine’s Day for 135 widows and widowers by delivering thoughtful gift baskets and bouquets. Szabad explained her motivation, stating, “People ask me why I do this. I answer that it’s really a kind thing to do — but quietly, I know I’m really doing it for my son and to help those who have a sense of loss and missing someone they loved dearly.”
