Retired couple joyfully fostered 130+ children over 35 years!

In the vibrant community of Pueblo, Colorado, Stan and Cora Krol embarked on a heartwarming journey in 1989, transitioning from busy parents to joyful empty-nesters. Embracing this new chapter, Cora expressed to Stan, “It’s too quiet. I wonder about foster care.”

This simple question sparked a profound change in their lives. Not long after, Cora came across an advertisement in the local newspaper that called for assistance at a nearby group home for adolescents. With open hearts, the Krols began their remarkable adventure in foster care.

Fast forward over 34 years, and the Krols have lovingly nurtured more than 130 children in their home, many of whom are young men facing challenges such as legal troubles, backgrounds of abuse, and struggles in their educational journeys. Stan shared with The Colorado Springs Gazette, “You take these kids in because you know they’re hurting inside,” highlighting their commitment to providing love and support to those in need.

Despite the challenges, the couple finds joy in their work, often welcoming up to 11 children into their home at any given time. Cora expressed the deep connection they share with the children, stating, “Every time you're ready to start pulling back, there's this little boy that needs you, and how do you say no?”

The need for foster homes in Pueblo County is significant, and Cora passionately wishes for more people to understand the joy and fulfillment that fostering brings, not just to the children, but to the caregivers as well.

Their incredible dedication has inspired their biological daughter, Tammy Walton, to follow in their footsteps and become a foster parent herself. Now, Tammy’s daughter, Sloan, also joins in, making this a beautiful family affair dedicated to caring for children who need it most.

Stan shared touching moments when they receive calls from former foster children, expressing gratitude for the love and values instilled during their time with the Krols. “I want to thank you for what you taught me,” they often say, sharing how they’ve built successful lives and families of their own.

The Krols’ extraordinary contributions have not gone unnoticed; the Colorado Department of Human Services has recognized them for their outstanding commitment to fostering, celebrating their impact as “ordinary Coloradans” doing remarkable work, even in their golden years.

Reflecting on their journey, Cora joyfully remarked, “The reason we feel so good is because of what we do,” while Stan added, “You have to have a purpose.” Their story is a shining example of the goodness and positivity that comes from giving love and support to those in need, illuminating the path of hope for countless children.
