Scout, a delightful black Labrador-Bloodhound mix residing in Minneapolis, is embracing her new role with joy and dedication. As the first dog of her kind in the state, she has been specially trained to locate lost pets and help bring them back to their loving homes.
Wearing a charming vest adorned with the message "Come Back Home, Puppies," Scout is a proud representative of The Retrievers, an entirely volunteer organization committed to reuniting lost pets with their families. According to Scout’s trainer, Miki Carlson, the mission is clear: “People call us when their dog goes missing, and we throw out the forces, so to speak.”
The Retrievers have been busy, having handled around 960 cases of lost dogs last year alone, and they’re on track to assist even more this year. Miki emphasizes their dedication: “We basically get the case and then just take it ’til the end, ’til we find their dog.”
Scout has been in training since her puppy days, preparing to join this wonderful team. Often, pet owners reach out to The Retrievers after their furry companions have been missing for some time, following unsuccessful searches on their own. Once Scout completes her training, she will be equipped to track a lost dog’s scent from its last known sighting, ideally guiding her team directly to the pet.
Through a GoFundMe campaign supporting Scout’s training, she will learn essential commands such as “take scent,” “search,” and “which way?” These skills will empower her to lead search teams effectively in their quest to find runaway dogs. Miki highlights Scout’s impressive abilities: “Scout will be able to follow a scent trail of about 13 days,” meaning she can help locate pets that have been missing for up to two weeks.
As Miki notes on the GoFundMe page, “We have needed a trailing dog so many times on Retrievers cases. With your help, we will finally be able to use the genius of a dog's nose to help bring more lost dogs home.” She also shared with MPR, “It's just going to be a game changer for us.”
Scout’s journey represents the spirit of kindness and community, showcasing how dedicated individuals can come together to make a difference in the lives of pets and their families.
