In a heartwarming event at a Louisiana state penitentiary, fathers and daughters came together for a magical evening, reuniting after years apart. This beautiful occasion was made possible by the wonderful organization, God Behind Bars, which collaborates with churches and ministries to support incarcerated individuals in Angola, Louisiana.
Leslie, a father who took part in the dance, shared a touching moment: “When I turned around and saw my baby in that dress and she busted out crying… I sobbed, man, and I ain’t no crier.” This heartfelt reunion showcased the deep bonds of love that exist even in challenging circumstances.
While the prison system often emphasizes punitive measures, God Behind Bars highlights the importance of restorative justice. This event truly embodied the belief that every individual is created in the image of the Lord, and it focused on the hopeful journey of reentering society.
The dance welcomed 37 daughters, ranging from ages 5 to 20, alongside 29 fathers, each dressed in suits generously donated by Amor Suits. The event was enriched by the talents and kindness of hair and makeup professionals, who provided their services, as well as beauty product bags from T3 Micro. The creative decorations and floral arrangements were thoughtfully crafted by the God Behind Bars team.
Before the dance, a delightful Thanksgiving dinner was served, featuring special performances choreographed by the fathers. One inmate, Kevin, reflected on the experience, stating, “We’re supposed to be the worst of the worst and the hardest of the hardest… and we walk around like that sometimes. Seeing all of us together with our kids, the loves of our lives, with no masks… that was cool.”
Jake Bodine, the founder of God Behind Bars, expressed the profound impact of the event: “It’s hard to put into words what took place at the first ever Daddy Daughter Dance inside Angola prison. I watched a group of men stand with pride and dignity, shedding every label the world had ever put on them. For one night they were not inmates. They were Dad. And the empty places in every heart were filled with joy, laughter, and a love only God can author.”
This inspiring event reminds us of the power of love, connection, and second chances, illuminating the goodness that can emerge even in the most unexpected places.
