A Kalamazoo police officer’s quick thinking and steady hands helped bring a frightening house fire to a hopeful ending when he safely caught a baby dropped from a second-floor window.
The officer had responded to a fire at a home in Kalamazoo, Michigan, when he discovered a woman and her baby trapped upstairs at the back of the house. With the staircase unavailable and time running short, he guided the mother through the safest way to get her child out.
Body-worn camera footage showed the officer standing below the window, ready to help.
“Ma’am,” he called out over the sound of sirens. “Throw me your kid! Kick out the screen! Kick out the screen!”
As the woman worked to clear the screen from the window, emergency radio traffic confirmed the urgency of the rescue: “We do have entrapment.”
The officer quickly updated others on the scene, saying, “Oh my God. I got contact on the B side. She’s trying to get the kid out the window, second story.”
Moments later, he positioned himself beneath the window and encouraged the mother to trust him with the child.
“Come here, okay, hang on … okay … I got it!”
The baby soon appeared in the officer’s arms, safe after the dramatic catch.
With the child secure, the officer immediately turned his attention back to the mother.
“Ma’am! Ma’am! Come out,” he said, before radioing, “Can I get someone on the B side? I got the baby.”
Other officers then brought a ladder to the back of the home, allowing the woman to climb down to safety. She was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked but reportedly was not injured.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said the cause of the fire remained under investigation. Crews also had to remove part of the roof to fully put out flames in the attic.
Thanks to calm teamwork and a courageous rescue, both the mother and baby made it out safely.
