NFL Draft #1 Pick Fernando Mendoza Pledges $500K to Fight MS, Honoring His Mom!

In a heartwarming celebration of generosity and compassion, Fernando Mendoza, the newest Heisman Trophy winner, has made a remarkable impact both on and off the field. Recently selected as the first overall pick in the NFL draft, this talented quarterback is also making headlines for his extraordinary commitment to charity.

This week, Fernando announced a significant donation of $500,000 to the National MS Society, a step that will help accelerate the journey toward a world free from multiple sclerosis. This contribution marks the launch of the Mendoza Family Fund, which builds upon the brothers' longstanding dedication to fundraising for MS in honor of their beloved mother, Elsa, who lives with the condition. Together with his brother Alberto, who is continuing his college football journey at Georgia Tech, Fernando has already helped raise over $360,000 through grassroots efforts.

Fernando's charitable journey began when he was a little-known quarterback vying for a starting role at the University of California. He initiated the ‘Mendoza Burrito’ in collaboration with La Burrita, with all proceeds benefiting the National MS Society. Later, while becoming a celebrated figure in Indiana, he teamed up with Buffalouie’s and Gables Bagels to create the “Mendoza Burger,” donating a portion of each sale. These initiatives collectively raised over $150,000 for the MS Society in 2025, as highlighted by Sports Business Journal.

Driven by his mother's unwavering strength and resilience, Fernando and Alberto have utilized their platforms to not only raise awareness but also to foster community support for those affected by MS. A particularly touching gesture came during the holiday season when Fernando gifted four families impacted by MS $10,000 each for a shopping spree at the Adidas store.

With his recent personal donation of $500,000, the Mendoza Family Fund will specifically support groundbreaking MS research at the University of Miami Health System and Miller School of Medicine. Fernando expressed, “This fund is about my mom and the millions of people living with MS,” emphasizing the profound influence she has had on their family.

“My mom has taught our family strength, resilience, and positivity. We’ve all learned from her example,” he reflected. “She’s the reason we fight, and the reason we believe we can do something bigger than ourselves. Together, we can bring us closer to a cure and a future free of MS.”

As he embarks on his professional career, Fernando is projected to earn approximately $9.9 million in his first season with the Las Vegas Raiders, part of a fully guaranteed four-year, $54.56 million contract. This financial success will further empower the Mendoza Family Fund to make a lasting difference.

Dr. Tim Coetzee, President of the National MS Society, praised the Mendoza family, saying, “The Mendoza Family Fund gives us the opportunity to turn that inspiration into real impact by advancing groundbreaking research and helping families like mine navigate this disease.” He noted that they have created not just a fundraiser but a movement rooted in love and purpose.

Together with their brother Max and their parents, Fernando and Elsa, the Mendoza family is dedicated to expanding their mission and inspiring even more involvement in the movement to end MS. Those wishing to support their efforts can contribute to the Mendoza Family Fund, fostering hope and change for countless individuals affected by this condition.
