Minnesota youth saves 18 kids after school bus driver has seizure

A quiet work break in St. Paul, Minnesota, gave Ebro Ahmed the chance to help 18 students and their school bus driver.

Ahmed, 27, had stepped outside Ya Bricks Snacks and Tobacco in the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood when he noticed a bus from Battle Creek Middle School moving past with its doors open. The driver appeared to be having a seizure.

Ahmed ran alongside the bus, jumped through the doorway and pulled the parking brake. He called police, then stayed with the driver, helping protect him from choking or hitting his head until paramedics arrived.

Though he has no medical training, Ahmed said watching Grey’s Anatomy helped him remain calm, even as adrenaline left him shaking. His thoughts, he said, were on the children. Asked about the danger to himself, he replied, “Even if I were to die, it would still be worth it.”

Ahmed later received a $1,000 reward, but he was modest about the attention: “Honestly, if it was up to me I would not even take recognition or anything.”

His quick response turned an alarming moment into a story of care for his neighbors.
