On November 1, a significant change will occur for 42 million individuals relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as their benefits come to an end. However, in this moment of challenge, a beautiful spirit of community is shining through as neighbors unite to support each other.
In Portland, Oregon, the delightful Heretic Coffee has launched a heartwarming initiative by offering a “free SNAP breakfast” to anyone who walks through their doors. Their generosity has sparked an impressive fundraising effort, raising over $184,000 to sustain this wonderful program.
Meanwhile, in Phoenix, Arizona, the charming dumpling shop Lovebite is opening its doors to offer free lunches to all EBT or SNAP cardholders during the first week of November, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a nourishing meal.
And in Atlanta, the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church is preparing to serve food to an inspiring 2,000 people this weekend, extending a helping hand to furloughed workers and those losing their SNAP benefits alike.
These mutual aid programs are arriving just in time, especially as the holiday season approaches, bringing hope and support to those who need it most.
On the same day that SNAP benefits conclude, Union Station Homeless Services is collaborating with the streaming platform Bigo Live to launch a month-long initiative aimed at ensuring families in need have enough to eat this Thanksgiving. The Grateful Streams campaign, running from November 1 to November 27, has set an ambitious goal of raising $15,000 to help Union Station serve individuals experiencing homelessness during this festive season.
Lynette Yang, vice president of Bigo Live, expressed the platform's commitment to community support, stating, “At Bigo Live, we believe livestreaming is more than just a connection. It’s revolutionary to how communities can support each other. We’re honored to kick off this initiative and bring people together in support of a good cause.”
The Grateful Streams campaign empowers viewers to participate by watching live streams from creators like Carlos (@carlos.manuelx), Rex (@bikeliferex), BeautDee, and The Bund Family (@Beautiishername1). By engaging in a Thanksgiving-themed “gifting system,” each digital gift contributes to a real meal provided by Union Station Homeless Services.
Moses Cox, one of the participating creators, emphasized the power of connection through livestreaming, saying, “This campaign is a chance to show how that connection can spark generosity and real change.”
For over 50 years, Union Station Homeless Services has served as the largest social services provider in the San Gabriel Valley. Beyond providing meals, this dedicated nonprofit offers mental health services, substance abuse counseling, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing, all grounded in the belief that housing is a fundamental human right.
Katie Hill, CEO of Union Station Homeless Services, beautifully articulated the impact of the campaign: “Every meal donated through Grateful Streams directly impacts individuals and families working toward stability and independence.”
This November, Union Station Homeless Services will host its annual Dinner in the Park celebration, a cherished event where thousands of community members will receive hot meals. This year, they hope to serve an astounding 750 turkeys.
Hill noted the challenges posed by rising food prices, which have placed a strain on many, particularly those who rely on SNAP benefits. “With the rollback of these essential benefits, we are anticipating a 300% increase in food pantry boxes. Last year, we served over 6,000 Thanksgiving meals — that number may double this year,” she shared.
The ripple effects of losing SNAP support extend beyond individual households, impacting entire neighborhoods and communities. "We need everyone’s help to make sure that no plate is left empty this Thanksgiving," Hill urged, highlighting the collective effort required to ensure food security for all.
In this season of gratitude and giving, the outpouring of support from communities across the country serves as a shining example of kindness and solidarity. Together, we can make a difference and brighten the holidays for those in need.
