Hockey Team's Teddy Bear Toss Brings Joy with 80,000 Plushies!

In Hershey, Pennsylvania, a delightful spectacle unfolds every year, transforming the arena into a vibrant tapestry of colors as stuffed animals soar through the air. This heartwarming event, known as the Teddy Bear Toss, has been a cherished tradition for the Hershey Bears, a minor league team in the American Hockey League, for 25 years. It’s a joyful celebration that not only brings the community together but also supports those in need.

As the game progresses, the excitement builds until the home team scores its first goal. In a jubilant rush, fans toss thousands of plush toys onto the ice, creating a beautiful chaos of cuddly creatures that cascade from the stands. Play is paused to allow the collection of these generous gifts, which will later be donated to children throughout central Pennsylvania. Dedicated volunteers gather the stuffed animals, turning the ice into a festive scene of giving and compassion.

Last year, the Hershey Bears achieved a remarkable milestone by collecting an astounding 102,343 stuffed animals during the Teddy Bear Toss. This past Sunday, the team continued this wonderful tradition, with defenseman Louie Belpedio scoring just three minutes into the game, prompting the release of 81,796 donated toys onto the ice. The announcer joyfully exclaimed, "Sweet cuddly mayhem! It’s a sky full of stuffies! It’s the Teddy Bear Toss magic in Hershey."

Since its inception in 2001, this event has brought nearly 650,000 stuffed animals to children and families in need. One inspiring local teenager, Gabby Kerchner, has made it her mission to keep this spirit of generosity alive. A dedicated Hershey Bears fan and high school junior from Mechanicsburg, Gabby was so moved by her first Teddy Bear Toss experience that she, along with her family, founded Gabby’s Acts of Kindness to encourage donations for the event each year.

Gabby shared her enthusiasm, saying, "I think about it every day when I wake up. It’s just so incredible." Her passion for the cause is palpable, and she has helped collect over 125,000 stuffed animals since starting her nonprofit. This year, she contributed thousands of plush toys that joined the joyful flurry on the ice.

Reflecting on the impact of the Teddy Bear Toss, Gabby remarked, "I definitely think a lot of people don’t really understand what that number means. All the places that it goes puts a tear in my eye." This week, children across central Pennsylvania received unexpected cuddles from their new furry friends, with many toys finding homes at the Milton Hershey School and other local institutions.

For Gabby, knowing that she played a part in spreading joy brings her immense satisfaction. She encapsulates the spirit of kindness beautifully: "Throw kindness around like confetti. You never know what a person’s going through… Do something good and you’ll get it right back."

The Teddy Bear Toss is a shining example of how community and kindness can come together to create something truly special. Let’s continue to share these heartwarming stories and inspire goodwill everywhere!
