Heroic Teen Lifeguard Earns White House Invitation After Saving Young Boy
A 16-year-old California lifeguard is being celebrated for his courage and compassion after rescuing a 10-year-old boy from powerful waves in Santa Cruz.
President Donald Trump announced that the teenager and his family would be invited to the White House, potentially alongside the child whose life he saved.
“We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor,” Trump said. “Very brave, he deserves it!”
The remarkable rescue gained national attention after Eric Trump shared a video of it Monday on X. By the following day, the footage had received more than 17 million views.
“This is truly the best of America! Well Done!” Eric Trump wrote while praising the lifeguard’s selfless actions. President Trump also shared his appreciation for the teenager on Truth Social and X.
The dramatic moment unfolded at Seabright Beach, where conditions had appeared fairly typical earlier in the day. Scott Vander Dussen, who recorded the rescue, said the ocean’s behavior changed suddenly.
“The waves, I wouldn’t say they were tranquil, but they were what you’d expect, a normal cadence and intensity,” Vander Dussen told NBC News. “And then that just changed in a heartbeat.”
The increasingly forceful surf caught many beachgoers by surprise and quickly swept the young boy away from shore.
“It caught a lot of people off-guard. Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment’s time,” Vander Dussen said.
Drawing on his extensive training, the teenage lifeguard immediately raced into the water. Vander Dussen said the first moments of the rescue occurred just before he began recording.
“That just missed the opening seconds where the first lifeguard just fearlessly ran out into those huge waves and did what was needed to bring help to that boy,” he said, adding that he had never seen such an intense rescue.
The lifeguard reached the boy and began guiding him toward safety as foaming waves repeatedly pulled at them. Whenever a breaker approached, the teen dove beneath it and continued making progress during calmer moments.
As the pair moved closer to land, a second lifeguard joined the rescue. They ultimately reached the beach, where a group of men helped carry the boy from the water.
Other people had also tried to assist but struggled to remain steady in the strong surf. Anaiis Moise, a marine safety officer for the City of Santa Cruz, expressed appreciation for that desire to help while emphasizing the importance of finding trained professionals rather than entering hazardous water.
“I understand the instinct to want to go and help someone,” Moise said. “And often the more effective way to help is going to be getting someone who is trained and professional to respond to that.”
Thanks to the lifeguard’s swift and skillful response, the boy was reported to be in stable condition.
A woman who identified herself on social media as the teen’s mother said his name is Ryder. After people suggested creating a GoFundMe campaign for him, she warmly thanked the public for its generous support while explaining that the teenager was doing work he genuinely loves.
“I am blown away by the love, kindness, gratitude and respect you’re sending his way!” she said. “A few people have asked about a GoFundMe — but honestly he was just doing the job that he absolutely loves.”
Santa Cruz lifeguards undergo rigorous preparation for emergencies like this one. Their requirements include 80 hours of marine-safety lifeguard training, 56 hours of basic lifeguard instruction and 24 hours of medical training.
Ryder’s brave response, the teamwork that brought the boy safely to shore and the outpouring of public gratitude have transformed a frightening day at the beach into an uplifting story of service, preparation and concern for others.
