Florida Man Returns $30,000 in Lost Cash: “It Wasn’t Mine to Take”

In Riviera Beach, Florida, a heartwarming act of honesty is reminding people just how much goodness exists in everyday life.

Luis Salazar had stopped at a Wawa convenience store when he noticed something unusual in the restroom: a fanny pack hanging from the handrail inside a stall. Rather than ignore it, he immediately tried to find its owner, asking people in the store whether anyone had left something behind.

When no one claimed it, Salazar opened the bag, hoping to find identification. Instead, he discovered several large bundles of cash. The total came to $30,000.

Even faced with what many would consider a life-changing amount of money, Salazar knew exactly what to do. He did not take any of it. Instead, he spent days trying to reunite the fanny pack with the person who had lost it.

Eventually, the owner reported the missing bag to Riviera Beach police. Officers reviewed security footage and were able to identify Salazar. When they contacted him, they let him know the owner was waiting at police headquarters.

Salazar went straight there.

“So, I give him his bag. ‘This is yours.’ And he was crying. And he hugged me,” Salazar said.

The owner, who chose to remain anonymous, was deeply moved by Salazar’s integrity.

“I was pretty astonished that anybody would have done that,” he said. “Think about it. That’s life-changing money. People would kill for that kind of money.”

For Salazar, however, the decision was simple.

“It’s not my money to take. I was not raised that way,” Salazar said.

His kind and honest choice turned a stressful loss into a joyful reunion, offering a bright reminder that integrity is alive and well.
