Doctor Adopts 4 Year Old Heart Surgery Patient in Foster Care and Finds Homes for Siblings!

In a heartwarming turn of events, a four-year-old boy named True found the loving family he always deserved, thanks to the compassionate actions of his anesthesiologist, Dr. Amy Beethe. This beautiful story began when True, born with congenital heart disease, faced heart surgery alone, a situation that would soon spark a wave of kindness and connection.

True spent his early years in foster care, waiting for the day he could find a permanent home. On the day of his surgery at Children’s Nebraska Hospital, circumstances led him to be admitted without the support of his social worker, who was unwell. It was in this moment of vulnerability that Dr. Amy entered the scene.

“When I saw him sitting there all alone, I was struck by the reality that this young child was about to undergo such a significant surgery without anyone to comfort him,” Dr. Amy shared. As the surgery progressed over seven hours, her thoughts remained with True, igniting a desire to learn more about his story and circumstances.

After reaching out to True’s case worker, Dr. Amy discovered that he had six siblings, five of whom were placed with their grandmother due to a challenging domestic situation. The search for a stable home for True was complicated by his medical needs, but the kindness of Dr. Amy opened new possibilities.

The social worker posed a transformative question: “Are you an option?” To which Dr. Amy felt a resounding yes in her heart. Already a devoted mother of six—three biological and three adopted—she knew that her family had room for one more.

After ensuring that True was recovering well, she spoke to her husband, Ryan, about the idea of adopting him. “I just knew we needed to have a conversation,” she recalled. When Ryan met True, it was love at first sight, and soon after, True officially became a member of the Beethe family.

But the story didn’t end there. Recognizing the bond True shared with his siblings, Dr. Amy took it upon herself to help them find homes, so they could remain connected. In a joyful twist, Amy’s sister adopted one of the girls, her sister-in-law welcomed another, and a co-worker took in two more. The Beethes then opened their hearts again, adopting True’s sister, Laney.

“The six all found homes,” Dr. Amy proudly shared, with all the adoptions finalized in a grand ceremony in August 2023. The collective joy of this family reunion was a testament to the power of love and community support.

While it’s hard to quantify the positive changes in the siblings’ lives, the most significant impact is undoubtedly on True. With his heart condition potentially requiring a transplant in the future, having a supportive and loving family is invaluable. As his doctor, Jason Cole, noted, “Without a successful, loving home life, a patient like True with extraordinarily complex congenital heart disease would not be able to survive.”

In 2022, when True entered the hospital facing surgery alone, he was greeted by an angel in the form of Dr. Amy, who would go on to fill his life with love and family. This inspiring journey of compassion and connection reminds us that kindness can create ripples of change, fostering happiness and hope for all involved.
