Delta Airlines is embracing the spirit of joy and inspiration through its remarkable "Dream Flight" program, which is dedicated to uplifting promising Black students and encouraging them to reach for the skies. Each year, this extraordinary initiative provides a unique opportunity for ambitious teens to explore the exciting world of aerospace and aviation.
Recently, a Boeing 757 took off from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, carrying 100 enthusiastic local teens who were selected to experience this year's Dream Flight. This program, developed in collaboration with the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP), aims to ignite passion and ambition among young people by showcasing the possibilities within the aviation industry.
Captain Justin Mutawassim, a proud Delta pilot, shared his own journey, recalling how meeting a Black pilot inspired him to pursue his dreams. “When I met my first Black pilot, that’s when I realized I could do it too,” he said. Now, he has the privilege of mentoring students like 17-year-old Hayden Lynch, who discovered his love for aviation after receiving a drone as a Christmas gift.
At the helm of the flight was First Officer Dana Nelson, Delta’s first Black woman pilot, who was joined by an all-Black cabin crew and co-pilot Lyob Makonnen. This diverse representation is a powerful testament to the program’s mission.
The adventure culminated at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Florida's "Space Coast," where the students marveled at historic rockets, shuttles, and simulators used in past missions. The day was enriched with a panel discussion led by OBAP aviators and astronauts, who shared valuable insights on navigating challenges both in aviation and life.
This year marked the 25th anniversary of Delta's Dream Flight, a program that has inspired over 4,000 students since its inception. Many participants have gone on to pursue careers as pilots, aviation engineers, and in various aerospace fields. Hayden Lynch expressed his aspirations beautifully: “My dream is to become a Delta pilot one day—and inspire others just like they inspired me.”
Delta Airlines' Dream Flight program continues to foster hope and ambition, proving that with support and inspiration, the sky is truly the limit.
